The Big Blue Crab

The Big Blue Crab of Rockport has a very unique history in Aransas County. The first giant crab was put up in 1957. It was all started by Dorothy and Sal Silverman who ran a grill known for its famous crab cakes. They had a Large Blue Crab made and installed on the top of the building, and the rest is history. The last crab we had was destroyed beyond repair during hurricane Harvey, but plans are currently in the works to have a new Crab Built.

Below are some great articles and pictures collected over the years telling you about this Iconic Blue Crab.

Below you will find a link to The History Center for Aransas County’s “History of the Blue Crab” Article which lays everything out in greater detail.

Big Blue Crab History

Kam Wagert Guest columnist The original big blue crab was perched on top of the Del Mar Grill (the building occupied by TNJ Treasures in downtown Rockport). In 1957, Dorothy and Sal Silverman ran the Grill, and the specialty was Dorothy’s famous crab cakes, which is why the big crab was put on top of the building.
